About us - History

In 1979 Henk Lagerweij founded his own Dutch wind turbine company. Many succesfull types were designed and manufactured. The wind turbine designs were always characterised by a number of innovative features. Lagerwey was the first to produce variable speed wind turbines with passive blade pitch control to limit the rotor speed. Lagerwey was one of the forerunners in noticing the benefits of flexible rotor structural design to decrease the loading.

Starting with a LW10/35, at the end of the 80’s Lagerwey became well known with its two bladed LW15/75 design. Its successor – the LW18/80, based on similar design principles – is even more a technical and commercial success. Currently more than 600 units are in operation.

In 1994, again on the same basis, the LW30/250 was introduced on the market with 30 meter rotor diameter and 250 kW nominal power. As a result of the light structure and excellent grid properties this wind turbine is specially suited for less developed countries. More than 300 LW30/250’s are in operation in India. In 1996 Lagerwey introduced a complete new wind turbine design, the LW50/750, a gearless three bladed 750 kW direct drive with synchronous generator. The converter technology is based on state-of-the-art IGBT’s and provides excellent grid quality. More than 250 units of the 750 kW series are installed all over the world. After the development of the gearless LW72/2000 Lagerwey could not keep pace with the market as a manufacturer due to the fast growing wind projects size and large investments.

In november 2006 the expertise was bundled once again in Lagerwey Wind BV which concentrates on design and engineering.
